Summary

Visible light (VIS) can alter Langerhans cells (LC), immune cells in the skin. High doses of VIS light deplete LC surface markers in mice, but without causing cellular damage.

Background:

  • Langerhans cells (LC) are crucial skin immune cells.
  • Previous studies show Ultraviolet B (UVB) and psoralen plus UVA (PUVA) alter LC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of visible light on mouse Langerhans cell surface markers.
  • To determine the dose-dependent effects of VIS on LC.
  • To assess cellular damage to LC from VIS exposure.

Main Methods:

  • Mice (BALB/c and C3H) were irradiated with single doses of visible light (400-740 nm).
  • Doses ranged from 10 to 1000 J/cm².
  • Skin biopsies were analyzed using immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.
