We developed MD Concept, a novel knowledge base model for clinical information systems. This semantic network integrates medical terminologies, enabling easy navigation of complex health data.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Knowledge Representation
  • Database Systems

Background:

  • Integrated clinical information systems require extensive knowledge bases.
  • These systems need to manage terms, specific information, and relationships between terms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a new knowledge base model, MD Concept, for clinical information systems.
  • To demonstrate the integration of diverse medical databases within this model.

Main Methods:

  • Developed the MD Concept knowledge base model using a semantic network, object-oriented paradigm, and relational tables.
  • Integrated the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED II), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IIIR), and a pharmaceutical database.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Created a browser for user navigation.
  • Main Results:

    • A functional prototype of the MD Concept knowledge base was successfully developed.
    • The prototype demonstrated seamless integration of multiple specialized medical databases.
    • Users can easily navigate the integrated knowledge base through the developed browser.

    Conclusions:

    • The MD Concept model provides an effective framework for building integrated clinical information systems.
    • Semantic networks and object-oriented approaches enhance the management of complex medical knowledge.
    • User-friendly navigation of comprehensive medical data is achievable.
