Summary

Computed tomography (CT) reveals lower thyroid CT numbers in chronic thyroiditis (CH) patients compared to healthy individuals. These CT numbers correlate with thyroid volume and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in CH.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Chronic thyroiditis (CH) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland.
  • Accurate assessment of thyroid tissue characteristics is crucial for understanding CH pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of computed tomography (CT) thyroid CT number (Hounsfield units; H.U.) in evaluating chronic thyroiditis (CH).
  • To explore the correlation between thyroid CT number, thyroid volume, and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in CH patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of CT scans from 155 patients with CH and 95 normal subjects.
  • Measurement of thyroid CT numbers (H.U.) and thyroid volumes.
  • Correlation analysis with serum TSH concentrations and urinary iodine levels.

Main Results:

  • Patients with CH exhibited significantly lower mean thyroid CT numbers (81 +/- 24 H.U.) compared to normal subjects (125 +/- 18 H.U.).
  • Thyroid CT numbers showed a linear correlation with KI solution concentration in phantoms but no significant correlation with urinary iodine in CH patients.
  • Progressively lower thyroid CT number groups (normal, moderately decreased, greatly decreased) demonstrated significant increases in thyroid volume and serum TSH levels.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid CT number is a valuable imaging biomarker for assessing chronic thyroiditis.
  • Decreased thyroid CT numbers in CH correlate with increased thyroid volume and elevated TSH levels, suggesting potential for disease severity stratification.
