Background:

  • Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a common orthodontic treatment for maxillary constriction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of RME on buccal (cheek) pressures exerted on the maxillary arch.
  • To quantify changes in buccal pressure before, during, and after RME.
  • To assess soft tissue adaptation to expansion over time.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 15 patients (median age 12 years) with bilateral maxillary constriction underwent RME using Hyrax or Haas appliances.
  • Buccal pressures were measured at the upper first molars bilaterally.
