Summary

Differentiating Cushing's disease from ectopic ACTH secretion is challenging. Even with typical symptoms and biochemical tests, identifying the tumor source requires advanced imaging and sometimes autopsy, especially when pituitary imaging is normal.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Cushing's syndrome presents with complex diagnostic challenges, particularly distinguishing pituitary causes from ectopic ACTH secretion.
  • Standard diagnostic criteria for Cushing's disease may not always reliably differentiate from non-pituitary ACTH-secreting tumors.
