    Background:

    • Bacterial contamination of dairy cow bedding is a concern for udder health.
    • Coliform bacteria, including Escherichia coli, are common environmental contaminants.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of high levels of coliform bacteria in bedding on teat end contamination and new intramammary infections in Holstein cows.

    Main Methods:

    • Holstein cows were bedded on sawdust experimentally contaminated with Escherichia coli at 10(6) CFU/g for 4 weeks.
    • A control group of cows was bedded with dry shavings.
    • Teat ends were monitored for bacterial contamination and new coliform infections.

    • The experimental group showed increased contamination of teat ends compared to controls.
    • Despite elevated teat end contamination, no new coliform intramammary infections were detected in the experimental group.

    Conclusions:

    • Further research is needed to understand the threshold for infection and the role of other factors.
