Summary

Heart rate threshold and lactate turn point may not always accurately predict anaerobic threshold due to variations in myocardial function. Heart rate curve analysis can be unreliable for noninvasive determination of anaerobic threshold.

Background:

  • The heart rate performance curve (HRPC) is used to determine exercise thresholds.
  • Myocardial function, assessed by left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), is crucial during exercise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between heart rate threshold (HRT), lactate turn point (LTP), and LVEF during graded cycle ergometry.
  • To evaluate the reliability of HRPC for noninvasive anaerobic threshold determination.

Main Methods:

  • Two groups of subjects (N=8 and N=7) underwent cycle ergometry.
  • HRT, aerobic threshold (AeT), and LTP were determined using linear regression breakpoint analysis.
  • Left ventricular ejection fraction breakpoint (LVEFBP) was assessed via radionuclide ventriculography.
