Ectopic prolactinoma on MRI

Summary

Ectopic prolactinoma in the sphenoid sinus is rare but important for diagnosis. MRI and endocrinological tests help identify these tumors, which can be treated with medication or surgery.

Background:

Ectopic prolactinomas, tumors secreting prolactin outside the pituitary gland, are uncommon.
Sphenoid sinus masses require careful differential diagnosis.

Observation:

Two cases of ectopic prolactinoma located in the sphenoid sinus are presented.
Patients exhibited elevated serum prolactin (PRL) levels and characteristic MRI findings of a sphenoid sinus mass.

Findings:

Endocrinological evaluations confirmed ectopic PRL secretion.
Immunocytochemistry verified the nature of the ectopic tumor.
Case 1, treated with bromocriptine, showed reduced PRL levels and tumor size.
Case 2 underwent transsphenoidal surgery, achieving normalized PRL levels.
