Summary

Generalized social phobia patients show abnormal autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning, specifically in blood pressure and heart rate responses during certain tests. Further research is needed to understand autonomic dysfunction in social anxiety disorder.

Background:

  • Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is a common psychiatric condition.
  • Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction may play a role in the pathophysiology of social phobia.
  • Previous research on ANS functioning in social phobia has yielded mixed results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning in patients with generalized social phobia.
  • To compare ANS responses between individuals with generalized social phobia and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen non-depressed, medication-free subjects with DSM-IV generalized social phobia and 15 healthy controls underwent a series of autonomic function tests.
  • Cardiovascular responsivity to tasks including Valsalva maneuver and isometric exercise was assessed.

    • Generalized social phobics demonstrated increased blood pressure responsivity during the Valsalva maneuver.

    • Patients with generalized social phobia exhibit specific abnormalities in autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning.
    • These findings suggest a potential role for autonomic dysfunction in the pathophysiology of social anxiety disorder.
    • Larger studies utilizing neuropharmacologic probes are recommended for further investigation.
