AIDS enteropathy: what's in a name?

Summary

Background:

The term acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) enteropathy was introduced in 1984 to describe intestinal changes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals.
Significant confusion exists regarding the precise definition and application of the term AIDS enteropathy in clinical research.

Purpose of the Study:

To critically evaluate the methodology of published clinical research on AIDS enteropathy.
To identify the sources of confusion surrounding the definition and scope of AIDS enteropathy.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was conducted to identify clinical studies with at least 20 subjects.
A methodological critique was performed on six identified cross-sectional studies concerning AIDS enteropathy.

Main Results:

No consensus was found among the reviewed studies regarding the definition, applicability, basis, or criteria for AIDS enteropathy.
Methodological limitations, particularly in case-control selection, restricted the conclusions of the studies.
While some HIV-infected patients exhibit mucosal alterations, their exact nature and relation to symptoms, immune function, and pathogens remain unclear.

Conclusions:

Further research is essential to establish a clear taxonomy for AIDS enteropathy.
Addressing methodological issues in future research is crucial for accurate understanding and definition.
