Specialized enteral formulas did not improve survival or cure rates in mice challenged with Listeria, influenza, or Candida infections. These animal models may not effectively differentiate the effects of modified nutrient compositions in enteral formulas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of commercially available enteral formulas (Osmolite HN, Perative, Impact) in enhancing host resistance against infectious challenges.

  • CF-1 outbred female mice were fed either a nonpurified diet or one of three liquid enteral formulas (Osmolite HN, Perative, Impact).
  • Mice were subsequently challenged with lethal doses of Listeria monocytogenes, influenza A, or Candida albicans.

    • The tested enteral formulations (Osmolite HN, Perative, Impact) did not demonstrate improved efficacy in enhancing host resistance against acute lethal infections in mice.
    • Acute lethal animal models may have limitations in detecting subtle differences in the immunomodulatory effects of modified enteral formula compositions.
