Background:

  • Acute renal colic is a common condition requiring accurate diagnosis.
  • Renal duplex Doppler sonography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to assess renal vasculature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of renal duplex Doppler sonography in diagnosing acute renal colic.

Main Methods:

  • Compared Doppler sonography findings with urography in 32 patients with suspected renal colic.
  • Calculated mean resistive index (RI) and difference in RIs (delta RI) for each kidney.
  • Assessed sensitivity and specificity using established thresholds for obstruction.

Main Results:

  • Nineteen patients had confirmed obstruction.
  • Statistically significant differences in mean RI and delta RI were observed between obstructed and non-obstructed kidneys.
  • Sensitivity was 44% and specificity was 82% when applying published thresholds.

Conclusions:

  • Renal duplex Doppler sonography demonstrates low sensitivity for detecting acute renal colic.
  • The technique may not be sufficiently reliable as a primary diagnostic tool for acute renal colic.
