Senior surgery residents trained via traditional methods achieved a 95% success rate in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This indicates that extensive hands-on experience in residency is sufficient for surgical proficiency, negating the need for costly supplementary courses.

  • Traditional "hands-on" surgical training is the cornerstone of resident education.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure requiring specialized skills.

Observation:

  • 171 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed by senior surgery residents.
  • Eight patients (5%) required conversion to open surgery; two had immediate complications.

Findings:

  • The average operative time was 91 minutes.
  • No deaths occurred; five procedure-related postoperative complications were noted.
  • Recent graduates demonstrate a 95% success rate in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Implications:

  • Large-volume general surgery residency programs adequately train surgeons in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
