Summary

Rats with area postrema lesions develop lasting food aversions, even after recovering from initial eating problems. This suggests the lesion creates a persistent aversion mechanism independent of immediate post-surgery effects.

Background:

  • Area postrema lesions (APX) in rats cause food avoidance during immediate post-surgery hypophagia.
  • Previous studies linked this aversion to the period of reduced food intake following surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if APX rats develop food aversions to foods ingested after recovery from lesion-induced hypophagia.
  • To determine if the aversion is as strong as that developed during the hypophagic period.

Main Methods:

  • Rats with APX or sham lesions were fed a novel food for 8 days, starting at least 1 month post-surgery.
  • Food intakes and weight gains were monitored.
  • Two-food choice tests were conducted 24 hours after novel food ingestion.

Main Results:

  • APX rats significantly avoided the novel food ingested post-recovery.
  • SHAM rats showed no food preference.
  • The aversion in APX rats was comparable in strength to aversions developed immediately after lesioning.

Conclusions:

  • Area postrema ablation induces a persistent unconditioned stimulus for food aversion conditioning.
  • This aversion mechanism remains effective over a month post-ablation, independent of hypophagia.
  • The relationship between APX-induced food aversion and hypophagia is indirect and complex.
