Summary

Eosinophilia in newborn infants is often linked to infections, particularly sepsis. This study found a strong association between neonatal eosinophilia and bacterial infections, especially in premature infants.

  • To investigate the clinical significance of eosinophilia in newborn infants.

  • Retrospective study of 261 neonatal admissions over 12 months.
  • Comparison of clinical and laboratory data in infants with and without eosinophilia.
  • Analysis stratified by gestational age.

  • 33 infants exhibited eosinophilia (> 1.0 x 10(9)/l).
  • Infants > 26 weeks' gestation with eosinophilia had significantly more septic episodes (20/23 vs. 4/23).
  • All infants <= 26 weeks' gestation with eosinophilia developed sepsis; gram-negative infections and necrotizing enterocolitis were exclusively observed in infants with eosinophilia.

Conclusions:

  • Neonatal eosinophilia is frequently associated with underlying infections.
  • Sepsis is a common cause of eosinophilia in newborns, especially premature infants.
  • Eosinophilia can be an indicator of serious neonatal infections.
