Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may reduce the required pressure over time. This study investigated if long-term CPAP treatment lowers the pressure needed to eliminate apnea events.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is commonly treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
  • CPAP functions as a pneumatic splint to maintain upper airway patency during sleep.
  • Prolonged CPAP use may offer physiopathological benefits beyond airway splinting.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if long-term nasal CPAP treatment reduces the CPAP pressure required to resolve apnea in OSAS patients.

  • Twenty-two adult patients diagnosed with OSAS underwent polysomnography.
  • Nasal CPAP treatment was initiated, and pressure levels were recorded at diagnosis and after 8.5 months of follow-up.
  • Apnea/hypopnea index, oxygen saturation, and snoring were assessed.
