Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure.
  • The potential consequences of retained gallstones in the peritoneal cavity are not well-documented.

Observation:

  • A case involving a patient who developed complications after gallbladder extraction during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • The patient presented with symptoms related to infected gallstone fragments within the peritoneal cavity and abdominal wall.

Findings:

  • The gallbladder ruptured during extraction, dispersing infected gallstone fragments.
  • These fragments resulted in the formation of microabscesses and granulomas in the peritoneal cavity and abdominal wall.

Implications:

  • Highlights the risks associated with retained gallstone fragments post-cholecystectomy.
