Surgical Endoscopy

Summary

Endoscopic localization of colon cancer is accurate in 86% of cases. However, with laparoscopic surgery, the 14% error rate in tumor location is more critical, necessitating improved localization methods.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Accurate tumor localization is crucial for effective colon cancer treatment.
  • Endoscopic methods are commonly used for pre-operative staging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic localization of intra-abdominal colon cancers.
  • To assess the implications of localization errors in the context of evolving surgical techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 320 patients undergoing colon cancer resection (1983-1988).
  • Comparison of pre-operative endoscopic tumor location with intra-operative findings.

Main Results:

  • Endoscopic localization was accurate in 86% of cases.
  • 44 endoscopic errors occurred, including seven missed cancers.
  • One-third of errors were associated with tumors in the cecum.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopy is a generally accurate method for colon cancer localization.
  • The 14% error rate gains significance with laparoscopic surgery, highlighting the need for supplementary localization techniques in specific cases.
