Summary

Physical exercise can increase platelet count, but platelet aggregability remains largely unchanged. Only the aggregation response to ADP showed a slight increase after high-intensity exercise.

Background:

  • Physical exercise may elevate platelet aggregability.
  • This is often attributed to increased plasma catecholamines and lactic acidosis during intense exercise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between exercise intensity and platelet aggregability.
  • Exercise intensity was referenced against the anaerobic threshold (AT).

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen male subjects underwent incremental exercise tests to determine running velocities at AT (VAT) and at 4 mM blood lactate (V4mM).
  • Subjects performed 30-minute constant velocity tests at either VAT or V4mM.
  • Blood samples were analyzed for lactate concentration, platelet count, and platelet aggregation (ADP and collagen).

  • Platelet count significantly increased immediately after both VAT and V4mM tests.
  • Platelet count remained elevated after recovery from V4mM tests.
  • Platelet aggregability did not significantly increase, except for ADP-induced aggregation immediately after V4mM tests.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise increases platelet count, with sustained elevation after high-intensity efforts.
  • Platelet aggregability is generally not affected by exercise intensity relative to AT, with a minor exception for ADP-induced aggregation.
