Summary

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is rare in Norway, with few reported cases. However, a significant number of hospital discharges suggest ARF may be underdiagnosed, possibly linked to increased group A-streptococci.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) has been infrequently reported in Norway over the past 30 years.
  • Official reporting to the National Notification System for Infectious Diseases (MSIS) indicated only five cases in the 1990s.

Observation:

  • Despite low reported cases, 99 patients were discharged from Norwegian hospitals with an ARF diagnosis between 1990 and 1992.
  • This discrepancy raises questions about the true incidence of ARF in Norway.

Findings:

  • The study investigates a potential increase in ARF incidence, possibly linked to rising group A-streptococci infections.
  • It explores whether such an increase has been overlooked in national surveillance.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and reporting of acute rheumatic fever.
  • Suggests a need for enhanced surveillance strategies for ARF and group A-streptococci infections in Norway.
