Summary

Prior knowledge aids spatial memory equally in older and younger adults, but older adults struggle more to ignore irrelevant information. This suggests age-related declines in inhibiting prior knowledge, not its facilitatory effects.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Human Development

Background:

  • Aging is associated with declines in spatial memory.
  • Prior knowledge, particularly schemas, may potentially compensate for these age-related deficits.
  • Understanding how prior experience influences spatial memory across the lifespan is crucial for cognitive aging research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether a knowledge-based schema for typical house layouts can compensate for age-related declines in spatial memory.
  • To examine the effects of schema-relevant and schema-violating information on spatial recall in older and younger adults.
  • To determine the role of individual differences in spatial visualization ability in age-related spatial memory performance.

Main Methods:

  • Four experiments were conducted involving older and younger adults.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants explored and recalled computer-presented house layouts, one room at a time.
  • Layouts varied in their adherence to typical house schemas.
  • Main Results:

    • Schema-relevant layouts facilitated recall equally for both age groups, failing to support the compensation hypothesis.
    • Violation of a typical house schema had a more detrimental effect on recall for older adults.
    • Individual differences in spatial visualization ability accounted for much of the age difference in performance, but not schema effects.

    Conclusions:

    • The facilitatory effects of relevant prior knowledge on spatial memory are age-invariant.
    • There is an age-related decrease in the ability to inhibit irrelevant prior knowledge.
    • Spatial visualization ability is a significant factor in age differences in spatial memory performance.
