Summary

A 12-year-old Maltese dog was diagnosed with disseminated hemangiosarcoma originating from the spleen. This rare canine cancer spread throughout the abdomen but did not metastasize to the lungs or heart.

Background:

Hemangiosarcoma is a common malignant tumor in dogs, often originating in the spleen.
Disseminated presentations can be challenging to diagnose and treat.

Observation:

A 12-year-old female Maltese dog presented with abdominal masses.
Tumor tissues were found on the serosal surfaces of multiple abdominal organs, including the liver, kidney, digestive tract, omentum, and diaphragm.
The spleen was enlarged and ruptured, with protruding tumor masses easily removable from organ surfaces.

Findings:

Microscopic examination revealed round to spindle-shaped tumor cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and prominent nucleoli.
Vascular spaces containing erythrocytes and serum were characteristic of the tumor.
The case was diagnosed as splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination, notably without lung or heart metastasis.
