Summary

Two eagles died from a fatal herpesvirus infection affecting their livers. This is the first report of naturally occurring herpesvirus hepatitis in eagles, highlighting a new disease threat to wild birds.

Background:

  • Naturally occurring diseases in wild eagles (Accipitridae) are infrequently reported.

Observation:

  • Two eagles, a booted eagle and a buzzard, presented with anorexia, weight loss, weakness, and inability to fly.
  • Necropsy revealed severe liver damage, characterized by coagulation necrosis and intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes.
  • Electron microscopy identified enveloped viral particles consistent with herpesvirus in hepatocytes.

Findings:

  • Histopathology and ultrastructural analysis confirmed herpesvirus hepatitis as the cause of death.
  • The observed viral particles exhibited characteristics of herpesviruses, including intranuclear and cytoplasmic forms, and budding from the nuclear membrane.
