Summary

Exercise significantly enhances linear growth and lean body mass in malnourished young children recovering from protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Increased physical activity promotes better physical development during recovery.

Background:

  • The role of physical activity in recovery from malnutrition is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of exercise on linear growth in malnourished rats and children recovering from PEM.
  • To determine if increased physical activity can improve linear growth and lean body mass in recovering children.

Main Methods:

  • Weanling rats were subjected to restricted or forced physical activity while pair-fed.
  • Preschool children with severe PEM were divided into Active and Control groups.
  • Dietary intake was controlled, and physical activity levels were monitored in children.

Main Results:

  • Physically active rats showed greater length and weight gains compared to inactive rats.
  • The Active group of children exhibited greater linear growth (22 +/- 8 mm vs 14 +/- 6 mm) and lean body mass (creatinine-height index: 0.97 vs 0.89) than the Control group.
  • Both groups had similar weight gain, but the Active group had significantly higher energy expenditure.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise promotes linear growth and lean body mass development in malnourished animals and children recovering from PEM.
  • Stimulating physical activity during recovery from malnutrition is beneficial for linear growth.
  • Physical activity should be considered as a component of rehabilitation for children with PEM.
