Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of major depression (using DSM-III-R criteria) in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
  • To compare the rate of major depression in Parkinson's disease patients with that of a matched group of physically disabled individuals without neurological conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 73 Parkinson's disease patients in Dunedin, New Zealand, completed the 30-item General Health Questionnaire and physical disability measures.

    • The prevalence of major depression among individuals with Parkinson's disease may not be higher than in age- and sex-matched physically disabled individuals.
    • These findings suggest that physical disability, rather than Parkinson's disease itself, might be a significant factor associated with depressive symptoms in this population.
