[A case of successful treatment of a severe form of polyradiculoneuritis]
Insights
This case study details the successful treatment of a severe Guillain-Barre polyradiculoneuritis case in a child. Intensive therapy, including plasmapheresis, led to rapid recovery and reduced hospitalization time.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Intensive Care Medicine
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Guillain-Barre polyradiculoneuritis is a severe autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system.
- Complications such as pneumonia, myocarditis, and nephritis can significantly worsen prognosis.
- Pediatric cases often require intensive management and present unique therapeutic challenges.
Abstract:
A case of successful treatment of severe form of Guillain-Barre polyradiculoneuritis complicated with pneumonia, myocarditis and nephritis in a child aged 12 is described. Complex intensive therapy including discrete plasmapheresis led to the patient's extubation on day 21, complete recovery of arm and leg movements on week 5, and regression in signs of myocarditis, nephritis, and pneumonia. The stay in hospital accounted for 56 days, which is twice as little as compared to the literature data. Six months after treatment the child's condition was satisfactory, no pathology in neurological status was observed.
