Summary

B-mode sonography detected parotid cysts in HIV-positive patients. These cysts may indicate early HIV infection and warrant further investigation, especially during cervical ultrasounds.

Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Radiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Parotid cysts are an emerging finding in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients.
  • The clinical significance and diagnostic criteria for these cysts require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of parotid cysts in HIV-seropositive individuals using B-mode sonography.
  • To assess the potential of parotid cysts as early indicators of HIV infection.

Main Methods:

  • B-mode sonography was employed to examine 20 HIV-seropositive patients for parotid cysts.
  • Cyst size, laterality, and clinical symptoms were recorded.
  • Correlation with CDC classification and HIV-related lesions was analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Parotid cysts were detected in 6 out of 20 patients (30%).
  • Cysts ranged from 0.32 to 3.8 cm in diameter.
  • No significant correlation was found between cyst presence and CDC classification or other HIV-related lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Parotid cysts are a notable sonographic finding in HIV-seropositive individuals.
  • Sonographic screening for parotid cysts may aid in the early detection of HIV infection.
  • The presence of cystic parotid lesions necessitates exclusion of underlying HIV infection.
