Background:

  • Epilepsy, specifically therapy-resistant partial seizures (TRPS), is associated with altered nervous system excitability.
  • The orienting reaction (OR) reflects the brain's response to novel stimuli and can be a marker of nervous system function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the somatic, autonomic, and electroencephalogram (EEG) components of the orienting reaction in individuals with TRPS.
  • To compare the OR in TRPS patients to healthy controls and epilepsy patients with controlled seizures.
  • To identify factors influencing responsiveness disturbances in TRPS.

  • Polygraphic recordings of somatic, autonomic, and EEG activity during auditory-elicited orienting reactions.

    • These findings suggest that OR components can serve as indicators of nervous system excitability in epilepsy and may be influenced by treatment efficacy.
