Summary

Gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) offer a comfortable alternative to nasogastric suction for gynecologic oncology patients, reducing complications and aiding recovery. These tubes effectively manage postoperative bowel dysfunction and provide palliation for advanced disease.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Patient Care

Background:

  • Long-term nasogastric suctioning can cause complications and discomfort.
  • Gynecologic oncology patients are at risk for protracted postoperative bowel dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the use and outcomes of gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) in gynecologic oncology patients.
  • To assess G-tubes as an alternative to nasogastric suction for managing bowel dysfunction and improving patient comfort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 35 patients receiving MIC gastrostomy tubes between September 1992 and April 1993.
  • Analysis of G-tube tolerance, duration of use, and functional outcomes including gastric drainage and enteral feeding.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The procedure was technically easy, adding ~10 minutes to operative time.
  • G-tubes were well-tolerated for 5-135 days, used for gastric drainage and enteral feeding.
  • Twenty patients were discharged with G-tubes in situ; five required continuous drainage due to tumor obstruction.

Conclusions:

  • Gastrostomy tubes are a convenient adjunct for postoperative care in gynecologic oncology.
  • G-tubes provide palliation with few complications for patients with bowel obstruction due to advanced malignancy.
