Summary

Cryosurgery offers an effective treatment for lentigo maligna, a skin condition with cosmetic and malignant potential. This method provides excellent results comparable to surgical excision, with a low recurrence rate.

Background:

  • Lentigo maligna requires treatment for cosmetic reasons and to prevent malignant transformation.
  • Surgical excision is standard but often limited by lesion size or location.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate cryosurgery as an effective alternative treatment for lentigo maligna.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty white patients with lentigo maligna lesions (1.3-4.5 cm) were treated with liquid nitrogen cryosurgery via open spray.
  • Follow-up was conducted to assess recurrence and cosmetic outcomes.

Main Results:

  • A low recurrence rate of 6.6% was observed over an average follow-up of 3 years.
  • Two recurrent lesions were successfully retreated with cryosurgery.
  • Eleven patients with over 5 years of follow-up showed no recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Cryosurgery is a highly effective treatment for lentigo maligna, offering excellent cosmetic and curative outcomes.
  • The results of cryosurgery are comparable to those of excisional surgery.
