[B-mode ultrasonography in the diagnosis of appendicitis]
1Nanpi County Hospital, Hebei.
Abstract:
This article reports the ultrasonographic data in the diagnosis of 142 cases of appendicitis. 30 out of 40 cases originally misdiagnosed by the surgeon were proved to be other disease entity by this method preoperatively. Of 102 cases of appendicitis, 95 were accurately diagnosed by ultrasound including 14 cases with entirely atypical history and 7 cases with unusual position. The accuracy of diagnosis made by B-mode ultrasonography was 93.1%. By B-mode ultrasonography, the data of appendiceal diameter, inner diameter and the peri-appendiceal exudate were used to diagnose and classify appendicitis preoperatively, thus the misdiagnose rate went down from 10.6% to 1.8%.

Assessment of the Abdomen I: Inspection and Auscultation
The abdominal examination is a cornerstone of clinical medicine, serving as a critical tool in diagnosing various gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. It involves a systematic approach that includes inspection and auscultation, each with distinct yet complementary roles in assessing the abdomen. This article will delve into these two primary methods healthcare professionals use to examine the abdomen.
Inspection of the Abdomen
The first step in any abdominal examination is inspection.
Appendicitis-I: Introduction
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...
Appendicitis-II: Diagnostic Studies and Management
Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...
Ultrasound I: Abdominal Ultrasonography
Abdominal ultrasonography, commonly known as abdominal ultrasound, is a vital, non-invasive medical imaging technique widely used in healthcare.
Procedure:
This diagnostic tool allows the clinician to visually inspect internal structures within the abdomen, including vital organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
The abdominal ultrasound process begins with applying a special gel to the patient's skin over the abdomen. This gel enhances the...
