Summary

A preterm infant experienced intraventricular hemorrhage and Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Both the infection and CSF pleocytosis resolved spontaneously without intervention.

Background:

  • Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a significant complication in preterm infants.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infections, such as Ureaplasma urealyticum, can exacerbate neurological damage.

Observation:

  • A preterm infant presented with confirmed intraventricular hemorrhage.
  • Ureaplasma urealyticum was identified in the infant's CSF.
  • Elevated white blood cell count (pleocytosis) was noted in the CSF.

Findings:

  • The Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in the CSF resolved spontaneously.
  • The CSF pleocytosis also cleared without specific antimicrobial treatment.
  • This suggests a potential for self-resolution of certain neonatal infections and associated inflammation.
