Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the pharmacokinetics of a fentanyl transdermal patch in elderly and young healthy subjects.
  • To investigate potential differences in absorption and clearance between age groups.

Main Methods:

  • A 20-cm2 fentanyl 24-hour transdermal patch was administered to 10 elderly (67-87 years) and 6 young (19-27 years) subjects.
  • Serum fentanyl concentrations were monitored over time.
  • Patch duration (PD) and area under the curve (AUC0-60) were calculated.
  • AUC0-60 was corrected for PD (AUC0-60/PD) to estimate effective serum concentrations.
