Postoperative radiation therapy did not significantly reduce recurrent proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in retinal detachment patients. Both irradiated and non-irradiated groups showed similar anatomical and functional outcomes after 14 months, with no observed radiation side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of postoperative radiation therapy in preventing PVR reproliferation and recurrence.
  • To compare the anatomical and functional results of irradiated versus non-irradiated eyes following retinal detachment surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study comparing two groups of patients with retinal detachment and PVR (grades D1-D3).
  • One group received 3000 cGy postoperative radiation therapy; the control group did not.
  • Patients were followed for at least 14 months (up to 36 months) to assess outcomes.

  • The study suggests that radiation therapy, in this context, does not improve anatomical or functional outcomes and carries no significant short-term risks.
