Summary

The new EBISZ scale shows strong concurrent validity for assessing elderly dependence, particularly for activities of daily living (ADL) and cognition. However, it may underestimate needs related to mood and social behavior in residential care settings.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Healthcare Quality
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Assessing care dependence in elderly residents of care facilities is crucial for appropriate care planning.
  • Existing scales may not fully capture the multidimensional nature of dependence.
  • The Elderly Dependence Scale (EBISZ) was developed to measure care dependence in this population.

Observation:

  • A study evaluated the concurrent validity of the EBISZ scale using data from 212 elderly residents (mean age 84).
  • Care dependence was assessed using activities of daily living (ADL) and special care needs (e.g., pressure sores, behavioral issues, cognitive impairment).
  • The EBISZ scale demonstrated a strong correlation (0.88) with a 12-item ADL scale.

Findings:

  • A multiple regression analysis indicated that ADL and cognitive function explained 83% of the variance in EBISZ scores.
  • The EBISZ scale showed limited sensitivity to mood and social behavior problems.
  • Over 50% of residents needing special care due to depression or social isolation were potentially missed by the EBISZ scale.

Implications:

  • Dependence in elderly individuals is a complex, multidimensional construct.
  • Comprehensive assessment of elderly dependence should integrate measures of ADL, mood, and social behavior.
  • The EBISZ scale may require supplementation with other tools for a complete understanding of resident needs.
