  • To determine if there is an association between genital papillomavirus infection (GPVI) and balanoposthitis.
  • To investigate the prevalence of HPV in men with balanoposthitis.

  • Retrospective HPV DNA examination of biopsy specimens from 23 men with balanoposthitis.
  • Penoscopic and histological evaluation for HPV infection.
  • Comparison with asymptomatic controls.

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA was detected in 56% of balanoposthitis patient samples, compared to 26% in controls.
  • Oncogenic HPV types (16/18, 31/33) were found in 7/13 patient samples.
  • Non-oncogenic HPV types (6/11, 42) were found in the remaining six cases.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides tentative evidence suggesting an association between HPV and long-lasting balanoposthitis.
  • Clinical presentations of GPVI can be diverse.
