Interdigitating cell sarcoma is a rare hematolymphoid malignancy. This study details four cases, highlighting distinctive features for diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematopathology
  • Tumor Biology

Background:

  • Interdigitating cell sarcoma (ICS) is an exceptionally rare hematolymphoid malignancy.
  • Previous case reports show significant variability in presentation and histology.
  • This study investigates four cases of ICS arising in lymph nodes.

Observation:

  • Patients were elderly (6th-8th decade) with peripheral lymphadenopathy and an indolent course.
  • No bone marrow or skin involvement was observed.
  • Two patients developed secondary carcinomas.

Findings:

  • Distinctive features include pleomorphic histiocyte-like cells, paracortical distribution, fibrosis, and eosinophil/plasma cell infiltrates.
  • Immunohistochemistry revealed CD68, S-100 protein, and HLA-DR expression.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Absence of CD21, desmosomes, and Birbeck granules was noted.
  • Implications:

    • These findings suggest a derivation from interdigitating dendritic cells.
    • The described morphologic and immunohistochemical profile aids in diagnosing ICS.
    • Clinicians should consider ICS in pleomorphic nodal tumors with these characteristics.
