Background:

  • These metastatic lesions typically present as hard, painful nodules, appearing between 7 days and 10 months after surgery.
  • A notable increase in reported cases, ten in the past year, suggests a potential rise in this complication.

  • The primary mechanism is likely direct implantation of viable tumor cells shed during surgery.
  • Specific laparoscopic factors may contribute: increased tumor cell exfoliation due to instrument manipulation, repeated contact of instruments with port sites, and tumor cell contamination during specimen retrieval through small incisions.

Implications:

  • These findings highlight the importance of considering port site metastasis in patients with a history of laparoscopy presenting with suspicious wound lesions.
  • Further research into preventative strategies during laparoscopic procedures involving potentially malignant tissues is warranted.
  • Enhanced vigilance and potentially modified surgical techniques may be necessary to mitigate this risk.
