Summary

Percutaneous cholecystolithotomy (PCCL) offers symptomatic relief for gallstones, preserving gallbladder function. However, recurrent gallstones remain a significant concern after this minimally invasive procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Biliary System Imaging

Background:

  • Symptomatic gallstones necessitate effective treatment options.
  • Percutaneous cholecystolithotomy (PCCL) is an alternative for patients unsuitable for surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess recurrence rates of symptoms and gallstones after PCCL.
  • To evaluate the impact of PCCL on gallbladder function.

Main Methods:

  • 32 patients with symptomatic gallstones underwent successful PCCL (1988-1991).
  • Clinical follow-up (24 months) and serial ultrasound (26 months) assessed outcomes.
  • Gallbladder motility was evaluated post-procedure in a subset of patients.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 16% of patients experienced recurrent symptoms.
  • 39% had retained gallstone fragments or recurrent gallstones.
  • Gallbladder function was preserved in most evaluated patients post-PCCL.

Conclusions:

  • PCCL is a viable treatment for symptomatic gallstones in high-risk surgical patients.
  • The procedure effectively preserves gallbladder function.
  • Recurrent gallstones pose a significant challenge following PCCL.
