Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of radiosurgery (RS) in patients with recurrent gliomas.
  • To assess treatment outcomes, including survival and tumor progression, following RS.
  • To determine the safety profile of radiosurgery in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients with recurrent gliomas underwent radiosurgery (RS).
  • Patient ages ranged from 8-62 years, with a median Karnofsky performance status of 80.
  • Tumor histologies included glioblastoma multiforme, anaplastic astrocytoma, fibrillary astrocytoma, and primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Main Results:

  • Seven early and one late radiation complication were observed, primarily related to increased intracranial pressure.
  • Median follow-up was 8 months; 14 patients died from progressive tumor with a median survival of 7 months.
  • Five patients survived, with a median follow-up of 19 months and a median time-to-tumor progression of 9 months.

Conclusions:

  • Radiosurgery (RS) demonstrates modest efficacy in selected patients with recurrent gliomas.
  • The treatment exhibits acceptable toxicity, with complications mainly linked to intracranial pressure.
  • Further investigation of radiosurgery for recurrent gliomas is warranted.
