Summary

Pregnancy in women under 15 years old is not associated with abnormal labor. This study found similar outcomes and lower cesarean delivery rates in adolescent mothers compared to older controls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze obstetric characteristics of women under 15 years old.
  • Compare labor courses of adolescent mothers to older controls.

Main Methods:

  • Matched cohort study comparing 261 nulliparous women under 15 to 261 nulliparous controls aged 20-29.
  • Matched for race, infant gender, and delivery year.
  • Excluded multiple gestation and delivery upon admission.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in admissions, cervical dilation, labor induction, epidural use, birth weight, or preterm birth.
