Thyroglossal duct cysts are common, but carcinomas are rare. This study presents two rare cases of thyroglossal duct carcinoma, one squamous cell and one thyrogenic, both successfully treated.

Area of Science:

  • Embryology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • The thyroid gland forms from the foramen cecum and descends in the neck, leaving a potential thyroglossal duct.
  • Normally closing by 10 weeks gestation, the thyroglossal duct can persist, leading to cysts or sinuses.

Observation:

  • Thyroglossal duct cysts are common, but carcinomas are rare, typically presenting as squamous cell carcinoma or thyrogenic carcinoma.
  • This report details one case of each rare carcinoma type.

Findings:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct was treated with the Sistrunk procedure, showing no recurrence over 10 years.
  • Thyrogenic papillary carcinoma was treated with the Sistrunk procedure followed by total thyroidectomy.

Implications:
