Summary

Stereotactic core breast biopsy offers accurate results comparable to surgical methods but is more comfortable and cost-effective. This minimally invasive technique is ideal for detecting nonpalpable breast lesions.

Background:

Open surgical biopsy has been the standard for diagnosing breast lesions.
Minimally invasive techniques are increasingly sought for improved patient comfort and cost-efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy, comfort, and cost-effectiveness of stereotactic core breast biopsy.
To assess the role of stereotactic core biopsy in managing nonpalpable mammographically detected breast lesions.

Main Methods:

A series of 75 patients underwent stereotactic core breast biopsy.
The study included the initial use of lateral compression for the procedure.

Main Results:

Diagnostic accuracy was equal to open surgical biopsy.
15% of patients had positive findings, including 11 cancers and 4 atypical hyperplasias.
The procedure was found to be more comfortable and cost-effective.

Conclusions:

Stereotactic core breast biopsy is a highly accurate and preferred method for nonpalpable breast lesions.
This technique is likely to redefine the roles of surgeons and radiologists in breast biopsy procedures.
