    Background:

    • Selective immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is a common primary immunodeficiency.
    • Understanding the prevalence and associated immunological changes is crucial for clinical management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the frequency of selective IgA deficiency in a large Finnish population.
    • To investigate associated changes in other immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgM) and clinical history.

    Main Methods:

    • Ouchterlony's double diffusion assay was used for initial screening of 64,588 blood donors.
    • Hemagglutination inhibition and radioimmunoassay confirmed IgA deficiency.
    • Serum IgG and IgM levels were analyzed in deficient individuals.

    • The incidence of selective IgA deficiency was 1:396 in blood donors.
