Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Respiratory Medicine
  • Clinical Pharmacology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Bronchiolitis is a frequent viral respiratory infection affecting infants and young children.
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a primary causative agent in pediatric bronchiolitis cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current patterns of drug utilization in pediatric patients diagnosed with bronchiolitis.
  • To identify common therapeutic agents and their application in managing bronchiolitis.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 100 pediatric patients (2 weeks to 22 months) with bronchiolitis was analyzed.
  • Data on administered medications, including albuterol, corticosteroids, aminophylline, and ribavirin, were collected and reviewed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection was confirmed in 64% of the evaluated patients.
  • Albuterol was used in 99% of cases, corticosteroids in 36%, aminophylline in 12%, and ribavirin in 2%.
  • Significant variability was observed in drug dosing, frequency, and treatment duration across patients.

Conclusions:

  • Current drug therapy for pediatric bronchiolitis exhibits considerable heterogeneity.
  • There is a critical need for robust clinical research to define evidence-based, optimal dosage regimens and treatment guidelines.
