    Summary

    Fetal parathyroid hormone (PTH) is undetectable in Rhesus monkeys, even with induced hypocalcemia. Neonatal PTH function matures rapidly after birth, responding to low calcium levels within hours.

    Background:

    • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium homeostasis.
    • Fetal and neonatal endocrine function is critical for adaptation to extrauterine life.
    • Previous studies on primate fetal parathyroid gland function are limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate near-term fetal and neonatal parathyroid gland function in Rhesus monkeys.
    • To determine the relationship between maternal and fetal calcium and PTH levels.
    • To assess the responsiveness of neonatal parathyroid glands to hypocalcemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Blood samples were collected from near-term fetuses and their mothers in Rhesus monkeys.
    • Ionized calcium (Ca++) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were measured.
    • Hypocalcemia was induced in fetuses and neonates using EDTA.
    • Maternal hypocalcemia was also induced to assess its effects on fetal parameters.

    Main Results:

    • Fetal serum Ca++ levels were significantly higher than maternal levels.
    • Fetal PTH was undetectable basally and during induced hypocalcemia.
    • Maternal hypocalcemia increased maternal PTH but did not affect fetal Ca++ or PTH.
    • Neonatal Ca++ decreased minimally in the first 48 hours.
    • Neonatal PTH reached adult levels by 6 hours of life and responded to induced hypocalcemia at 12 hours.

    Conclusions:

    • The Rhesus monkey fetus does not appear to produce detectable PTH.
    • The fetal parathyroid gland may not be functionally active or responsive to hypocalcemia.
    • Neonatal parathyroid gland function matures rapidly post-birth, demonstrating responsiveness to calcium levels.
