Area of Science:

  • Oral Oncology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant melanoma of the oral region is a rare and aggressive malignancy.
  • Limited data exists on its clinical course and treatment efficacy compared to other oral cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of oral malignant melanoma.
  • To compare its prognosis with oral squamous cell carcinoma.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of radiotherapy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 20 cases of oral malignant melanoma from 1970-1991.
  • Literature review of 140 additional cases reported in Japan since 1974.
  • Clinical classification of tumors into five types based on pigmentation and morphology.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Oral malignant melanoma demonstrated a poorer clinical course than oral squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Radiotherapy was found to be effective in extending patient survival.
  • Tumors were classified into pigmented and nonpigmented nodular and mixed types, and pigmented macular type.

Conclusions:

  • Oral malignant melanoma may possess distinct biological behavior compared to cutaneous malignant melanoma.
  • New diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines specific to oral malignant melanoma are warranted.
  • Radiotherapy is a valuable treatment modality for improving survival outcomes.
