[Screening with meaning? Use of ultrasound in pregnancy]

Norway introduced an offer of one routine ultrasound examination to all pregnant women in 1986. Since then, an improved ultrasound technology and more skillful operators have made it possible to detect foetal malformations at a much higher rate. A new consensus conference on the use of diagnostic ultrasound during pregnancy will be held in Norway in 1995. The present paper reviews the recent literature on ultrasound screening. Three randomized controlled trials (the Uppsala-trial from 1988, the Helsinki-trial from 1990, and the RADIUS-trial from 1993) and one meta-analysis (Bucher and Scmidt, 1993) are evaluated. The author also comments on the recent epidemiological studies on the safety aspects of routine ultrasonography during pregnancy.
