[Penicillinase of Staphylococci isolated from milk and dairy products]
Veterinarni Medicina
|February 1, 1975
Abstract:
Examinations were performed in 173 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk and dairy products. Of this number, 143 strains were resistant and 30 sensitive to penicillin. All the resistant strains produced penicillinase. Penicillinase production was demonstrated also in vivo by a test on white mice.
Insights
Most Staphylococcus aureus strains from dairy products resist penicillin due to penicillinase production. This enzyme
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Bacteriology
- Food Science
Context:
- Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in milk and dairy products.
- Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in food safety.
- Penicillin is a common antibiotic used in treating bacterial infections.
Purpose:
- To investigate the prevalence of penicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains from dairy sources.
- To determine the correlation between penicillin resistance and penicillinase production.
- To validate penicillinase production in vivo.
Summary:
- 173 Staphylococcus aureus strains from milk and dairy were analyzed.
- 143 strains exhibited penicillin resistance, while 30 were sensitive.
- All resistant strains demonstrated penicillinase production, confirmed both in vitro and in vivo.
Impact:
- Highlights the significant issue of antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens.
- Provides evidence for the mechanism of penicillin resistance in dairy-associated S. aureus.
- Informs strategies for controlling resistant bacteria in the dairy industry.
