    Summary

Two hemoglobin variants, Hb Camden and Hb Hope, were identified in patients with pulmonary disease and hemolytic anemia, respectively. These findings highlight the clinical significance of hemoglobinopathies.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Medical Genetics

    Background:

    • Hemoglobin variants can cause various clinical manifestations.
    • Electrophoresis is a key diagnostic tool for identifying hemoglobin abnormalities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the identification and clinical context of two specific hemoglobin variants: Hb Camden and Hb Hope.
    • To illustrate the diagnostic utility of hemoglobin electrophoresis in clinical practice.

    Main Methods:

    • Hemoglobin electrophoresis was performed to separate and identify different hemoglobin variants.
    • Clinical data from patients carrying these variants were reviewed.

    Main Results:

    • Hb Camden (beta131 Gln to Glu) was identified in a middle-aged female with pulmonary disease.
    • Hb Hope (beta136 Gly to Asp), migrating close to Hb A, was found in a young obstetrical patient with mild hemolytic anemia.

    Conclusions:

    • Hb Camden and Hb Hope represent distinct hemoglobinopathies with associated clinical presentations.
    • The electrophoretic mobility and clinical findings underscore the importance of accurate hemoglobin variant identification.
